DAISY Award

Congratulations, Maggie Anschutz, RN! Maggie is our latest DAISY Award Winner! Read her nomination below:

Our four-year-old daughter was recently in the Emergency Room, feeling yucky and just not herself. Maggie was our nurse. She was so wonderful in caring for our little one, she talked to her and explained all of the not so pleasant things our daughter was going to need to have done (tests, scans, procedures, etc.) All of the results of our daughter’s tests came back “fine” and we were going to be sent home. I knew in my “mom gut” something more was wrong and I knew my child was not feeling well. I worried about putting her through more seemingly “unnecessary tests” and pokes and unpleasantries. I was upset that nothing was “found” and knew in my gut something was still wrong, even if the tests said otherwise. Maggie was there for me. She listened, explained and reassured me the whole time. She said that she was going to be working in the ER the next day and if my daughter was still not well and I still felt in my gut something was wrong I should bring her back in. She reassured me she was here for me too and that I should trust my gut.

The next day my daughter was worse, still not herself and fading fast. I continued to feel in my gut that something was wrong. I called Maggie in the ER and told her what was going on. She told me that she could tell I was still really upset, and I needed to trust my gut and bring her back in. She assured me that she would be waiting for us when we arrived and to travel safely. Upon our arrival, Maggie was indeed waiting for us as she promised. She served as the perfect line of communication between our situation and the provider(s) on duty. She quickly brought the provider up to speed and more tests were put in motion. The whole time, Maggie continued to reassure me that my mom gut is to be trusted and the provider assured us that we would not be leaving without answers. More tests, pokes, and scans were ordered and Maggie continued to provide the best care for our little one. She also continued to be a source of patience, calm and reassurance to my husband and me.

As test results came back, things were beginning to be “more” than what the ER provider’s here at DCMC felt comfortable with. Maggie and (provider) set up a consultation with a Pediatric provider at St. Vincent’s and orchestrated a direct admit and transfer via ambulance to Green Bay, St. Vincent PICU.

This was one of the scariest things I have ever dealt with as a parent, and am beyond grateful for Maggie and her listening, reassuring ear. Her presence, knowledge and support during this time was appreciated more than she knows. Every patient, parent, family member, and colleague are blessed to have Maggie on their team. Thank you, Maggie for all that you do for everyone here at DCMC!

BEE Award

Mary OHern is our latest BEE Award recipient! Way to go, Mary! Read her nomination below:

I would like to nominate Mary for the Bee Award for the incredible support that she provides to everyone on our unit. She is always willing to help and is a dependable resource for nurses, physicians, CNAs, and all ancillary staff. Mary is the steady point of contact that we can always count on, and she consistently goes above and beyond for anyone that needs her.

One example that truly stands out was when a recently discharged patient called the unit with questions about their follow up care and needed additional assistance communicating. Mary patiently worked with the appropriate support service to answer the patient's questions, ensuring he felt comfortable with the plan going forward. She never rushed the conversation and made sure the patient felt supported every step of the way.

Mary 's dedication, compassion, and commitment to both our patients and our team make her an invaluable part of our unit. She does all of this while working toward her LPN degree, which speaks to her passion for healthcare and serving others. We are incredibly fortunate to have Mary, and she is truly deserving of this recognition.
