DCMC Pediatrics Team Welcomes Dr. Elizabeth “Betsy” Welsh

Door County Medical Center (DCMC) is excited to welcome Elizabeth “Betsy” Welsh MD, FAAP to the Pediatric team

Dr. Betsy was born and raised in west Michigan, and has been practicing medicine in Fremont, Mich. since 2005. She was the first pediatrician in a multi-specialty group that has now grown to five providers. She has been practicing in the same small town for 21 years, and has really enjoyed watching her patients grow up and often become parents themselves.

Dr. Betsy has raised three of her own children. She knows firsthand how deeply parents are connected to their children and can relate to the challenges as well as the celebrations.

Raising her own kids has been her brightest joy.  Emma (23) is about to finish two masters degrees in environmental engineering and sustainability, and wants to work with water; her youngest, Joe (18), is about to graduate high school and will start a chemical engineering program in Indianapolis this fall; her middle son, Jake (21) is on a pre-med track to become a pediatrician as well. You may see him this summer shadowing his mom at DCMC!

More than a job, a calling

Dr. Betsy was the first person in her family to finish college. She considered writing as a career, but becoming a physician was in the back of her mind.  An extra scholarship for pre-med students solidified that it was the direction that she wanted to pursue and has never regretted her choice. She grew up as the middle child, and played a significant role in caretaking for both of her brothers. She attributes those years as one of the primary reasons that pediatrics has been a great fit for her and knows how lucky she is to have found her calling.

Dr. Betsy considers it to be a privilege and an honor to take care of all children from the smiling babies to the young adults who are becoming independent, “Knowing my patients well is the best part. Helping patients with medical complexity grow up to have beautiful lives is also very rewarding,” shares Dr. Betsy.

When she is practicing, Dr. Betsy strives to put patients and families first, and aims to provide excellent medical care in a gentle, safe environment, “I think of medicine as a sacred space. It is a privilege to take care of children in times of health and times of illness.”  She feels a sense of pride when she is able to be a calm presence for a family that is experiencing worry or concerns.

A Member of Our Community

When Dr. Betsy started looking for a new place to practice, DCMC was her very first interview in 21 years. During her two visits, she felt immediately at home and felt led to practice medicine here. She hopes to  continue to provide excellent care to the children of this new community, and start a new chapter in her own life. She is looking forward to having lots of visitors and making new friends and establishing a warm, welcoming home in Sturgeon Bay. She plans to explore the shoreline, paddleboard, practice yoga and become part of the Door County community. On her days off she will be sleeping in, reading, playing with her dogs, exploring the villages and indulging in local cuisine (we hear that pineapple on pizza is her favorite!).

Dr. Betsy is looking forward to getting to know the community and her patients. Join us in giving her a warm welcome!
